Buzzin: Shtickers

do you have in the offing any friends or coworkers who take point too much time to tell a story? they really only need about 40 seconds for set up and punchline, but some how they drag the tale on until your eyes glaze over and your thoughts wanders to thoughts of grocery lists and bills to extend. buzzin’ is a bit counterpart listening to your longwinded friend’s pointless exclusive. a tiny trouble presents itself and then in spite of 20 minutes the cast dances all about, accomplishing nothing and wasting our time. the famous difficulty this week? cisco’s name isn’t on the cd samplers the boyz will bring with them on their announce assignment. the episode begins in the wee hours of the morning, when cisco and shwayze suffer from ready to do ryan seacrest’s morning radio corroborate. the editing of this whereabouts would entertain you believe that they are waking up at 4:30, but i’m agreeable to put that in reality the boyz have justified made their way home from a New Zealand pub after bunch.

at seacrest’s be noticeable, their song “buzzin” makes its big tranny debut. everybody agrees it’s sure to be the summer hit. now, as a person currently living in this summer, i have to nothing but raise my hand and ask a quick question. has anyone heard this song blowing up all over the radio? i ask this in plain words and not in my usual snark mode. i’m hoary beyond my 20-odd years and don’t know what the kids are listening to these days. but for all of the hype this song gets, and requite its own mtv picture and, practically, it’s own pontiac machine, i’d think there’d be a whole lot more of it. from time to time they listen to “buzzin” and cisco and shwayze dance along with glee, seacrest delves into a little of the boyz out of the public eye. “so cisco,” he begins, “you’re from malibu, but the trailer deposit in malibu.” to which cisco nearly throws down his ugly hat and shouts, “hell no! i’m rich, bitch!” but instead, shwayze chimes in to explain that it is he who in fact grew up in the trailer park.

THAT’S WHAT MAKES HIM SO DERN FASCINATING

after that wraps, it’s only connected with 8:00am, and the boyz don’t identify what to do with themselves at such an early hour. so they decide to (probably) get some breakfast and then they drop by their record label, suretone, to visit their manager jordan.

as they approach jordan’s function, his assistant, a snazzy looking little ones servant in a cap, calls doused, “jordan, the guys are here!” i guess jordan values vagueness and informality in his company. jordan congratulates the boyz on their crystal set appearance and lays out their upcoming plans for a nationwide receiver turn. they’ll start tomorrow, heading to the east coast. seems easy enough, but the boyz are bound to make a hash of it up somewhere along the line because jordan won’t be with them suited for the first occasional days. he’ll be on a vacation in mexico with his family.

the boyz go home to pack and prepare for the treatment of their next big journey. then, everyone’s favorite boner, dave patton, drops by with 40,000 cd samplers for them to pass out at all of the stations they visit. immediately, shwayze tears open one of the boxes to take a gander at his first cd. he’s all smiles and “oh snap”s until he notices something is missing. cisco’s name is nowhere to be create. no “featuring cisco.” no “produ …

That’s going to be the focus of a lot of speculation as we move toward the 100 year celebration of the Burnham Plan. Already, architects Zaha Hadid and Ben van Berkel of UN Studio - neither of whom have built in the city - have been chosen to create temporary pavilions scheduled to open next June in Millennium Park to house “video exhibits and programming related to Burnham and big dreams for the future,” according to The Burnham Plan Centennial website.One focus of that celebration is the future of Chicago’s Union Station, designed by the successor firm to Burnham and Company, Graham, Anderson, Probst and White. It was the View image last - and grandest - of the city’s great rail terminals. The station lost its head in 1969, when its great steel and glass concourse, a close second to Penn Station’s in New York in majesty, was demolished for an anonymous office tower. The soaring travertine-clad waiting room lined with tall Corinthian columns survives, one of Chicago’s greatest interior spaces.

Today, over 54,000 passengers, mostly commuters but also 7,000 Amtrak riders, use the station each weekday.

This month the Chicago Architectural Club has announced a competition, Union Station View image 2020 A Crossroads for the High-Speed Rail City, charging entrants with devising “. . . innovative solutions for the transformation of Union Station into a center of high speed rail traffic and related programs.”

With the airlines increasing, apparently limitless contempt for their passengers driving more and more travelers into Amtrak’s arms, the importance of inter-city rail is finally shaking free from decades of Reagan-styled abuse and ridicule.

People are awakening as if from a trance to the realization that mid-distance rail travel isn’t a punch line but an escape valve.

Drive to the airport. Make sure you get there a last an hour before your flight. Anticipate delayed departures and even later arrivals. Then, when you finally arrive at your destination, View image there’s another long trip into the city. When Amtrak is not totally dysfunctional, it will get you there faster, and perhaps, on a good day, even more pleasantly.

With no federal or state commitment to increasing funding for inter-city rail, and an imploding economy, the Architectural Club’s competition has no small measure of “if we build it, they will come” romanticism about it, but who knows? Maybe the stars will align, and it won’t just be ethanol coming out of the cornfields.

Submission of entries to Union Station 2020 opens October 10th and closes October 15th. Winners will be announced November 8th, and entries will be exhibited at the Chicago History Museum. So much for a close shave off the bat. In what was perhaps the most-watched basketball game in history, Team USA struggled early against China — Team USA led by just 3, 29-26, midway through the second — but Team USA’s defensive pressure finally wore down China and carried the US to a 101-70 win.

There’s been a lot of talk about Team USA having to adjust to the international style of play — in the NBA, teams generally play from the outside-in, but internationally teams generally play outside-in. China began by playing outside-in, meaning they posted Yao and then waited for him to get doubled and throw it out to open shooters on the outside. And the Chinese shooters were red-hot early on going 5-7 from three in the first 15 minutes.

China managed to create a couple of highlight plays in the fourth, but one of the human victory cigars (Tayshaun Prince) was already in and the US was nursing a 25-point lead.

China was led by Yao, who finished with 13 and 10, but he was never really dominant and seemed out of gas early on.

For Team USA, it was a solid, steady performance to open the Games. Dwight Howard kept pounding the ball into Yao, creating contact. LeBron ran out over and over again for easy dunks and had three blocked shots, including one ridiculous two-handed snatch from mid-air.

Even Jason Kidd got into the act, creating two steals early on and setting a tone. In fact, all three of Team USA’s point guards were terrific; Deron Williams had his best defensive game in a while and Chris Paul was all over the court on both ends. (NBC’s Doug Collins said that Chris Paul might be the big surprise for Team USA this summer. So it would be a surprise that the guy who almost won the MVP a few months ago is playing well?) We should also single out Chris Bosh, who finished with 9 points and 8 boards.

As a team, the USA forced 18 turnovers on 14 steals, meaning they were successful at turning China’s mistakes into offensive opportunities.

Yet all was not great. Carmelo Anthony was pretty much non-existent, finishing 0-3 from the floor for 3 points in 14 minutes. Kobe was also disappointing, going 1-7 from behind the arc and forcing a couple of shots outside the offense.

China’s strategy of creating outside jumpers worked, but only for a while.

“We didn’t play our best game but we played well,” LeBron said after the game.

And today, playing well was more than enough.
