Our View: Everyone’s a bit Irish

Everyone can be a little bit Irish.

Especially the way we like to define Irish at St. Patrick’s Day. It’s a nationality we don’t define with border checkpoints, citizenship tests or passports. It’s a sense of belonging we define by state of mind — a state of mind born in wonderful events like the annual Leprechaun Parade and Convention.

Edward Sheridan, the Hibernians, everyone who helped out and — of course — the wee folk themselves deserve a great pat on the back this week after reminding us all last weekend what Clinton truly is, and what Irish truly is.

Irish is the colorful phrasing of “Himself’s” weekly updates on the wee folk’s preparations for their annual convention. It’s a language that dares you not to crack a grin and respond with your own witticism. It’s a manner of expression that puts all your “serious” reading and listening in sharp perspective.

Irish is heavy food and heavy drink, but more importantly, it’s savoring every drop and every morsel. It’s an approach to eating and drinking, and singing and toasting, that anchors the partygoer in the moment. It’s a good meal’s invitation to conquer your worries by simply forgetting them.

Irish is the Clinton we all want, a Clinton of Italians, Puerto Ricans, Poles and others, but a Clinton where they are all Gaels and all Irish, with that gift of gab, that love of life, that pixie grin. It’s the town that laughs together and cries together. The town where politics is a sport, and debate is the field of play. The town that closes ranks on itself, and looks out for its own. The town with no need to improve because it’s happy with what it is.

Irish is utopia — a Clinton whose faults become charms. Irish is also a day like Saturday, which reminds us that our town’s faults often are its charms, and other towns’ charms often are their faults. It’s events like the Leprechaun Convention that remind us all — “real” Irish and Irish-for-a-day — that there’s more to a community than neighbor squabbles, tax rates and the coming election. Nobody’s perfect, and every cloud has a silver lining — that’s Irish.

In Clinton on St. Patrick’s Day, everyone can be a little bit Irish. In fact, good luck proving last weekend that anybody wasn’t.

With a few carefully chosen words, a cultivated zest for life and the eyes of a child, everyone can be a little Irish every other day of the year, too — and it’s too bad we all aren’t.
