Communal vinyl is back!

read in the newspaper the other day that there’s been a trend towards vinyl surging in popularity again and that part of it (according to an emi exec) is due to the re-form of public listening by kids after decades of increasing headphone-oriented seclusion. perhaps it seems like a surprising thing to be taking place just as djs are ostensibly giving it up, but it strangely mirrors my own experience.i was given a 60s portable vinyl player for christmas 2006 (thank you, dear) and i’ve since transform into a sum total vinyl junkie, while cds are starting to feel very cheap, flimsy and clear to use by comparison. vinyl has a greater orbit of music available, it’s much less a strain on the pocketbook and it’s real fun to go hunting seeing that in bargain bins, this weekend so plainly i’ve bought 25 of them. and i’ve totally latched onto the communal listening thing - me and my friends entertain been listening and discussing records, we’ve used it as an ice-breaker at parties, and currently it’s set up at work where it’s the source of much (mostly positive) discussion and the strange vagaries of peoples’ tastes in music is readily made apparent. (how can anyone think old-school tommy boy hip-hop from 1985 shrill?)in extensive, though. if indeed kids have gone back to sitting in their teenage rooms listening to records together, fifties style, what kind of an impact will this have on the music? that amiable of thing is a bit of an obsession of mine.

gold medal, is it a coincidence we’re seeing this in conjunction with a renewed interest in the music of the early-to-mid eighties, like latin freestyle? by besotted the easiest-to-access quality music in vinyl transaction bins is stuff from that period - earlier decades have been picked non-functioning, leaving largely crap, and in the nineties vinyl became a dj-aimed luxury. cheap, quality goods with a flash of an attitude have always managed to be made cool by the kids, and here we have music that kids can find and be inspired by ready at hand. i’m hoping for a decent hi-nrg and italo rebirth too, but i’m not holding my breath - they may be a tad too square in the end.of advance, music for listening to together also requires absolutely assorted qualities to those we’ve been used to in the internet age. the devolution from the album to the single to the 10-second listening experience (which, let’s face it, is yon the amount of time we judge revitalized music by these days before clicking on) is likely to take a different route. in particular, weak spots, extraordinarily harsh contrasts and boring tracks ought to be more stringently punished, as it’s no longer just a single precedent that has to be interesting and tracks get changed if unbiased one person complains. but mostly continuity indubitably gets stronger again. i’ve certainly heard more whole albums recently (as horizon music at work) than i deceive for many years.music as a gossip starter or a colloquy piece places deliberate demands on it, too. will it have to be relatively mainstream so that everyone can relate to it, or should it be unusual and obscure to side with storytelling? lyrics could become less important if people talk outstanding the music more. brief songs over long songs is indubitably a possiblity too, i think - go in, arouse interest, don’t let it skid.in any case, i’m sure there’ll be some effect - music history shows how vital a new medium and a new usage can be for changing music. and since vinyl isn’t new, nor collective listening to records, maybe history can tell us something of what we can expect from this development, too.

i don’t have a fancy ring tone. to chide you the reality, i am always a little confused when i appreciate a commercial that says “text 78987 to set out your free band accent.” i recall that’s possible, i mean from a technological quality of view i get that, but it also make of feels like voodoo to me. i pattern in a number and then a few seconds later when my phone rings it plays the first verse of run dmc’s song “it’s tricky?” that makes me feel ex-.but i do like when people add a inner element to their sounding tone. i like when you’re hanging out with someone and all the sudden their phone rings and starts blaring over “amazing grace.”and it seems like a kismet of people are starting to sell those tiara tones. i think lil’ wayne has made a million off the give someone a buzz tone for his air “lollipop.” since i do not subscribe to the theory that mo’ money equals mo’ problems, and would in fait accompli like mo’ money, i ruminating maybe i should create my own ring tones. some that are holy, some that are based on this locale. objective for taunt. and gargantuan profit, but also fun.some new resonate tones:1. for most of this afternoon, i’ve been sitting in a meeting room at a diocese of ottawa building, watching a committee of adjustment meeting.why did i accept half a day off (and my evening) to do this? for inconsiderate reasons. the house that backs onto ours was sold earlier this year, and the stylish owner wants to dash it down and develop two houses in its place. he needs variances on the lot size to do that.but it’s been an attractive sociological undergo. the meeting is now into its fifth seventh hour. there were 33 items on the agenda, and only three were adjourned to another meeting. the members of the committee have taken four breaks, including one to replacement rooms (because another committee is starting their deliberations on another set of variances.)there have been a preponderance of serious looks, huge document books, and uncountable, sundry boards showing lovely proposed new houses, eaves (seriously, one guy needed a schism because his eaves would be closer to the lot vocation than allowed by six inches), and in one victim a 16-story stronghold.i’ve also been spending time at the library and archives of canada recently, working on a client project that required a lot of photo research.what both of these cases had in common was … time warp.in the committee case, we received a notice (in our mail) that the variances were on the agenda, then we got interested close by having two semi-detached houses in our back yard compared to the everyone that’s been there since we bought, and we got interested. we called the community association, talked to our neighbours, and … here i am with our community association co-chairs.in the archives case, i learned that only a tiny percentage of the nearly 4 million photos the archives holds are digitized, or even catalogued with useful descriptive tags. materialistic isn’t categorized by subject; it’s by the person or organization which donated the material! my requests for photos required:it’s easy to forget that not all things is moving at google speed. it’s exciting to imagine how social media could remodel the committee of setting. it’s intimidating to think of the mounds of material that are being received by the archives, and how far behind they are.i’m impressed, mostly, with both the diligence of the committee members, the people who have stuck it out to take part, and with the passion of the archivists. but man, it feels like i got off the autobahn and onto a horse path.could there be a way of harnessing the power of the crowd to digitize or categorize 4 million photos? an archival folksonomy?ciao,bob.

U.S. Rep. Paul Broun (R-Athens) is questioning the religious convictions of his opponent in the Republican primary for the 10th congressional district seat as the election on Tuesday approaches.

“It’s unfortunate that he doesn’t understand redemption and salvation and a changed life in accepting Jesus as lord and savior,” Broun says of state Rep. Barry Fleming (R-Harlem) in an interview which aired Thursday on Georgia Public Broadcasting’s WACG 90.7 FM in Augusta. “It’s not about religion but about a relationship with Jesus.”

But Fleming is a Christian, and according to his website, is an active member of Harlem Baptist Church. He has served as chairman of the board of deacons there, among other duties, the website says.

“Paul is wrong on that,” Fleming says of Broun’s remarks in an interview scheduled to air on Friday. “My Christian faith is the center of my life and I’ve tried not only to witness to other people in my life but I’ve tried to live a life as an example for others, and I’ll continue to do that.”

Britain’s Mark Cavendish claimed his first Tour de France stage victory after a thrilling sprint finish.

The 23-year-old beat Spaniard Oscar Freire and German Erik Zabel in a bunch sprint to become the first Briton since David Millar in 2002 to win a stage.

Stefan Schumacher retained the overall leader’s yellow jersey, while Millar remains in third, 12 seconds behind.

“It’s the biggest thing to have happened to me and to do it so young, it’s a massive thing,” said Cavendish.

“I came here with the intention of winning one (stage), I would have gone home disappointed if I hadn’t.”

Cavendish has been making his mark on the cycling world this year.

Earlier this year the Manxman won two stages of the Giro d’Italia and in August he heads out to Beijing as part of Team GB’s Olympic cycling squad.

The 23-year-old will partner Bradley Wiggins in the men’s madison and is being widely tipped to return home with a medal.

In fact, his Olympic commitments could mean that Cavendish does not complete this year’s Tour de France and he could pull out once the race enters the mountains.

Wednesday’s 232km stage from Cholet to Ch?teauroux was the longest in this year’s Tour and was led almost from start to finish by three breakaway riders.

The French trio of Lilian Jegou, Florent Brard and national champion Nicolas Vogondy opened up a gap of more than eight minutes, which was slowly whittled away by the chasing peloton.

Vogondy broke away from his compatriots in the final 1.5km, only to be overhauled by the sprinters around 30 metres from the line.

Cavendish held off late attacks from Thor Hushovd, Freire and Zabel, and pulled away from his rivals in the final metres to claim glory after almost five-and-a-half hours in the saddle.
